Solar Panels on Albion Valves HQ

Albion Valves (UK) Limited further demonstrates its commitment to reducing its carbon emissions by recently installing 240 x 440W PV (solar) panels, allowing the company to generate over 100,000kWh of clean energy per year!

The 240 PV panels have been installed on the roof of Albion’s premises based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire; the panels cover 468.7m2 of their roof space.

Albion consumed approximately 87,000kWh of electricity in 2023, which means Albion will be producing more electricity than it uses over a year, but due to supply/demand fluctuations (more electricity is generated in summer, when Albion will typically use less, and less will be generated over the winter months when demand is higher), this means that Albion will still be partially powered by the grid.

Taking into consideration the excess generated in summer and the potential shortfall in winter, it is predicted that Albion will use 43,404kWh or 41% of the electricity that they generate, and will sell any excess, circa 62,640kWh or 59%, back to the grid.

However, by using 43,404kWh of solar power per annum, compared to the total annual consumption of 87,000kWh, Albion will be 49.9% self-sufficient.

By using self-generated solar power, Albion will eliminate 49,679kg per year of CO2 emissions being released into the atmosphere.

Sanwal Amjed, Albion’s Quality Manager, managed this project. He comments, ‘ My promotion to Quality Manager in 2024 made me responsible for all Quality, Environmental, Health & Safety operations at Albion, therefore one of my ongoing targets is to meet any Scope 1, Scope 2, or Scope 3 CO2 reduction targets determined by the UK government and assist the business in becoming ‘greener’ in general, despite not always having a legal obligation to do so as an SME.’

Installing PV panels means Albion can reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and minimise the business’s carbon footprint. The PV panels will generate enough power for the whole site to operate during summer months, including the charging of electric company vehicles! Albion is striving to achieve ISO 50001 accreditation, which demonstrates a commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability and assists in reaching energy management goals as a company.

Sanwal Continues ‘At Albion, we understand the negative impact businesses can have on climate change therefore we are always looking for ways to identify, address, and improve where we can, and help others do so too. This leads on to us recently compiling an Embodied Carbon Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) – this document details the environmental impact associated with the life cycle of a product, from the raw material extraction to the recycling or disposal of the product at the end of its useful life, by publishing this data it allows users of our products to assess the environmental impact of the products they are using, whilst also giving us insight into other key areas to focus on.’

Albion Valves (UK) Limited is making strong strides on its sustainability journey, now generating over 100,000kWh of clean energy annually through new solar panels—making the business nearly 50% self-sufficient and cutting nearly 50 tonnes of CO₂ each year.
